The Hellenic Society of Paediatric Dentistry (HSPD)

The Organizing Society of the 23rd IAPD Congress is the Hellenic Society of Paediatric Dentistry (HSPD).

Established in 1961 the HSPD is dedicated to the promotion of scientific knowledge and expertise for the oral health of children in Greece through scientific meetings and congresses in association with organizations from public and private sector, foreign and domestic for the achievement of mutual goals.

In 2001 the HSPD was awarded by the Academy of Athens for its contribution to the improvement of the oral health of children. The Academy of Athens is the most highly respected scientific institution of Greece.

    Dr Anna-Maria Vierrou was born in Athens Greece. She obtained her DDS from the Athens University School of Dentistry and the Certificate in Paediatric Dentistry from the University of Connecticut Health Center, USA. While in the US, she received the National Board Dental Examination of ADA Part I and II and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Part I. She holds a PhD from the University of Athens.
    She is the author of several articles published in Greek and international journals and has participated as a speaker in national and international congresses. Her scientific interests include behavior management of children and adolescents, prevention and fluorides and restorative techniques and materials.
    Dr Vierrou is Vice President of the Hellenic Society of Paediatric Dentistry and Secretary General of the 23rd IAPD Congress, Athens 2011, Organizing Committee. She is a member of the Clinical affairs Committee of EAPD and of the Congress Site Selection Committee of IAPD.
    She runs a private specialist practice in Athens.

    Dr. Berdouses was born in Greece and graduated from the Athens University Dental School in 1989. He received his Certificate in Paediatric Dentisrty in 1991 from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dental School and the MSc in Oral Biology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Graduate School in 1992. Since 1993 he works in his private practice and he is a clinical instructor at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry, University of Athens Dental School.

    He is Web Editor of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry and the Hellenic Society of Paediatric Dentistry Web Sites and Secretary General of the Hellenic Society of Paediatric Dentistry. He has been a guest speaker in Greek and International congresses and has published more than 20 papers in Greek and International journals.

    Philoxenia is the Greek word of hospitality and etymologically comes from two words , the word philos which means friend and the word Xenos which means foreigner. Hospitality for Greek people dates back to Homeric times. .Xenios Zeus (the King of Gods) was the protector for foreigners. Among the centuries G reeks kept a deep respect to people who visited their country. Taking care of guests ,and sharing with them social activities offers a great pleasure and happiness to us. Greece is an endless journey so we are waiting for you to share with us precious moments.

    Dr Sophia Geki was born in Greece and graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Dental school. She took her postgraduate certification in Paediatric Dentistry in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem .In the next years she has been clinical instructor at the department of Paediatric Dentistry of Athens University.
    Since 2003 she is a member of the Hellenic Society of Paediatric Dentistry and two years later till now is the treasurer of this society. She is a member of other scientific societies and she participated in several congresses in Greece and abroad as a speaker.
    She runs a private practice in Athens.
    Her scientific interests are targeting to pulp treatment approach, behavior management and dental treatment to autistic children.

    Dr. Andreas Agouropoulos was born in Greece and graduated from the University of Athens, Dental School in 1997. He received a Certificate in Paediatric Dentistry from Tufts University, School of Dental Medicine, Boston, USA in 2003 and a M.Sc. Degree in Oral Biology from the University of Athens in 2008. He is currently a PhD candidate in Oral Biology at the University of Athens. Since 2003 he is working in private practice and as a clinical instructor at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry of Athens University.

    He is a member of the Board of the Hellenic Society of Paediatric Dentistry and member of other scientific societies. He has participated as a speaker in several congresses in Greece and abroad. His current research interest is in prevention of dental caries and obesity in preschool children.

      Stergios Arizos was born in 1970. He graduated from the Dental School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1995. Between 1997 and 1999 he attended a postgraduate course (Master in Dental Science) at the Dental Institute of the University of Leeds, UK. In 1999 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada specializing in Paediatric Dentistry. Since November 1999 he maintains his own private practice in Veria, Greece. He is a member of many scientific societies and organizations including IAPD and EAPD, while his main research interest lies in the field of restorative materials used in paediatric dentistry. Since 2008 he has been elected as secretary general of the Dental Association of the prefecture of Imathia in the province of Macedonia, in northern Greece. Between 2000 and 2006 he has been member of the board and secretary deputy of the Hellenic Preventive Dentistry Society. He is also a clinical supervisor in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry of the Dental School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

    Dr. Lisa Papagiannoulis is the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 23rd IAPD Congress. She is the Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatric Dentistry in the Dental School of the University of Athens, Past President of the IAPD and the HSPD.

    Dr. Kotsanos is associate professor and head of the department of Paediatric Dentistry at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), located in the province of Macedonia in N. Greece. He graduated at AUTh in 1977, received his PhD at Bristol University, UK in 1982 and his certificate of Pediatric Dentistry for international graduates from New York University in 1991.

    His fields of study include the management of fear and anxiety in pediatric dental patients, the use of new glass ionomer materials for restoring primary teeth, molar-incisor hypomineralisation, enamel caries histophatology and microradiography and fluoride releasing dental materials. He is an active member of EAPD, IAPD, ORCA and involved in ADEE.

    Dr. Kotsanos has twice won the Koulourides Research Award presented by P&G Hellas. He has made over 30 presentations at international congresses and has published 25 papers in international dental journals on the above subjects.

The Dental School of the University of Athens

The 23rd IAPD Congress is organized under the auspices of the Dental School of the University of Athens.

Established in 1911, it is one of the two Dental Schools in Greece.

In 2011 the Dental School organizes its 100years Anniversary Congress, June 18-19, 2011, following the 23rd IAPD Meeting in Megaron Athens International Conference Center.
