Prof. Bergendal Birgitta (SWE)
Dr Birgitta Bergendal is head of the National Oral Disability Centre for rare disorders at the Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education in Jönköping, Sweden. The Centre was established in 1999 to increase knowledge on diagnosis and treatment of oral and dental signs and symptoms in rare disorders.
Dr Bergendal is a specialist in prosthetic dentistry and holds a doctoral degree from Umeå University, Sweden. She got her specialist training at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and has worked as a clinical specialist and a tutor in specialist education.
She has worked on the organizing committees for the consensus conferences “Oral implants in young patients” in 1996 and “Ectodermal Dysplasia with special reference to dental treatment” in 1998. She organized the first European conference on Ectodermal Dysplasia in 2002.
Her primary research interests are in the fields of multidisciplinary approaches to oral habilitation and rehabilitation in young individuals with need for prosthetic treatment. Her thesis explored clinical and genetic factors in oligodontia and outcomes of treatment with dental implants in ectodermal dysplasia. She has published papers in the fields of attitudes to teeth and loss of teeth, dental implants, and prosthodontic treatment in rare disorders. Dr Bergendal has presented lectures in the Nordic countries and abroad and has written chapters in several textbooks.
